To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:
The petition of the undersigned shows:
Australia has a climate emergency, shown by the Black Summer bushfires and the recent floods. If we continue to mine and burn coal, oil and gas, our lives are at risk. In the near future, we’ll experience further economic losses: food, insurance, energy and health costs will go up, with over a million jobs in industries including tourism and farming now at risk.
Scientists say the world must fully phase out coal and gas by 2030. Yet the Liberals and Labor are still promoting energy policies for more coal and fracking of gas, having received over $200m of company donations over the past decade.
Your petitioners request that the Senate:
- Ban the construction of new coal, oil and gas projects and transition our economy to zero carbon energy.
- Support mining workers and communities by building new, sustainable industries for the move beyond fossil fuels and to keep people in work.
- Phase out the mining, burning and export of thermal coal by 2030.
