Guide for booth volunteers

Thank you

You are playing an extremely valuable role in the Greens’ election campaign, and your assistance at this critical time is greatly appreciated.

If you need assistance

For assistance, call:

  • Rolf Muller on 0403 754 026, or
  • Samy Chatta on 0473 536 941,
  • Charles Jago on 0403 902 613

(Note that they will probably be on a booth as well.)

Why we do it

Distributing how-to-vote (HTV) cards is vital to the Greens’ election results. HTVs particularly influence undecided and first-time voters, and can boost the Green vote by something like 2%, so your work will affect the outcome of the election!

You will need

  • Warm clothes, rain jacket and umbrella, or sunscreen and hat, as appropriate.
  • Drinks and snacks and a mobile phone.
  • A-frames with signs (“coreflutes”) and booth kit including:
    • How-to-vote sheets
    • Name badges, stationery items
    • Copy of roster with names & numbers of booth workers & ‘mobile team’
  • A sense of fun! You’re helping to change the world, so enjoy it!

Polling Place Rules

  • Briefly, in most states and territories, you must not canvass for votes, hand out HTVs or display posters within 6 metres of the entrance to the booth. The booth entrance is the entrance to the building and not the entrance to the grounds. However, the actual limits in practice are set by booth officials.
  • It’s extremely important to obey all directions given to you by polling booth officials.

Helpful hints

  • The booth opener should arrive at least 30 minutes before opening to get a good spot and place A-frames and any other signs (but you would need to arrive before 6am if you want to beat Labor and Liberal!)
  • Keep valuables in pockets or locked in a car (you won’t be able to watch them)
  • It’s in your interest to cultivate a good relationship with polling booth officials!
  • Recycle HTVs if you’re allowed, but if booth officials won’t allow it, don’t argue.
  • Try to be the first or the last person to hand the HTV to the voter. Walk to the voter, make eye contact, speak clearly and offer the HTV with open posture.
  • Think about the image that will attract those people who might vote Green.
  • Have a rapport with workers from the other parties, and do talk to voters, but don’t miss handing out cards because of deep conversations with them.
  • You are an ambassador for The Greens, so keep your cool, no matter what!
  • You can send feedback on any experiences as a polling booth volunteer to contact@canadabaygreens.org – including comments about this polling location, problems, highlights, etc.

Greens post-election party info – for the Reid 2025 election

  • A local lunch for Reid election volunteers is planned for Sunday 11th May – details yet to be finalised.
  • If you would like to go to a party on election night with people from across Sydney, an event will be held at Sydney Brewery, 28 Albion St Surry Hills, from 6pm until late on the 3rd of May. This is a fully wheelchair accessible venue with accessible bathrooms. Sydney Brewery is a 5 minute walk from Central Station.
