Petition: Increase T9 Northern Train Line Services

To the Honourable the President and Members of the NSW Legislative Council, this petition of certain citizens of NSW notes that:

The T9 Northern Train Line trains in Canada Bay are fully loaded and more services are needed. There are regular occasions in peak period when people cannot board a train at Rhodes, North Strathfield and Concord West stations. The line needs new service capacity now – either more frequent trains or longer trains, or both.

Due to new development imposed by the NSW government, the population numbers around North Strathfield and Concord West will grow enormously in the next twenty years. North Strathfield’s population could more than triple!

The State’s Rail Service Improvement Program proposes no improvements for the T9 Line. There are no plans to increase train services from Rhodes. The proposed track Quadruplication between Rhodes and West Ryde is currently not progressing. It is unlikely that the coming Sydney Metro West line* will reduce the passenger load on the Northern Line.

The impact on the T9 Line of the Metro opening in 2032 is unclear.

Your petitioners request that the NSW Government:

  • Immediately investigates options to provide more train services on the T9 Northern Train Line to satisfy transport needs of existing and future Canada Bay residents.
  • Announces funding and timing for any required service upgrades, as soon as practicable.

* Note: The Sydney Metro West line from the City to Westmead is expected to open in 2032. It will cross the T9 at North Strathfield.
